Artist statement: "For this work, I took a ceramic pitcher and dropped it on to the ground, shattering it into multiple pieces. As I carefully took each piece, wrapped it in fabric, figured out where it fit, and sewed them all back together, I thought of the Lord of the vineyard and His servants. They gave loving, tender care to each tree, as reflected in the repeated phrases, “It grieveth me that I should lose this tree” and “What could I have done more for my vineyard?” I was surprised by the precision required to sew the pitcher back together, in a process similar to grafting, and the attention required for each shard. It was a spiritual experience as I thought about the individual love and attention Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ give to each of Their children. I thought about my mission and ways I have participated in the gathering of Israel as one of the Lord’s servants. I thought about the wild and natural roots and branches, represented by different fabric, and how each child of God is on a different path yet loved just the same. I thought about how Jesus Christ is the Living Water, symbolized by the pitcher. This piece is symbolic of many different gospel truths to me, and I am grateful for the spiritual reflection it inspired."
