Artist statement: "Years ago while studying Mormon 9, I read the following: “…turn ye unto the Lord; cry mightily unto the Father in the name of Jesus, that perhaps ye may be found spotless, pure, fair, and white, having been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb…” “Cleansed by the blood of the Lamb” - what unique wording. Blood doesn’t cleanse - it stains. Think clothes, people. The woman with the issue of blood was pronounced unclean because of the fluid. And yet somehow, through the miracle of Christ’s Atoning sacrifice - we are made clean. Not just washed like a fresh batch of laundry, but cleansed, having become “spotless” and “pure.” This piece features dark browns and crimsons depicting the Savior’s blood (as well as our sins) transformed into light reds and pinks. Eventually, these colors turn to bright whites. This represents the process of healing through Christ’s grace. It’s not a clean, easy process. It’s messy and almost imperceptible. Jesus turns our deepest stains into something pure and whole. Those stains may be from our own mistakes or the sins of others, from the sting of death or the sorrow of unfairness. Whatever the stains on our canvas may be, Christ has the power to heal them. We may feel it’s too late to be cleansed. But one of the greatest truths I’ve learned from the Book of Mormon is that Jesus Christ is real. He is your Savior. If He has the power to create this intricate, miraculous world, He surely has the power to create miraculous healing for you. It may take time, long suffering, and crying mightily unto the Lord. But, through the miracle of the Savior’s Atonement, you can absolutely be “cleansed by the blood of the Lamb.”
