Artist statement: "This project was inspired by 2 Nephi 1:15, where it has the phrase “encircled….in love”. This was the basis for this art project, the embodiment of being encircled in love: an artistic hug. These bracelets I made for my dad were gifts for each school year he was gone as a professor and supercommuter. Starting at my wrist and working its way up my arm, they were made in that order. I made these with the thought that I wanted my dad to be encircled in love, literally and figuratively. He had his ring to be encircled by my mom’s love, and I wanted something close in proximity but created by me as a reminder that I love him, too. This would always be a circle representing a hug, one of the main manifestations of love in our family. As you can see, the colors used shifted from the colors I liked, to the colors he liked, to ending on a color I liked, which depended on what I wanted him to remember more that year: either that he was giving me a hug when he put it on, or I was giving him a hug when he put it on. This was meaningful to me, because when my dad left as a supercommuter, I knew that while we were apart physically, that artistically we were together, and that made it easier to be apart as a family. Because he would always be encircled in mine (and my mom’s) love for him."
