Artist statement: "My art piece depicts the Servant of Helaman, an unexpected heroic figure that stepped up when the safety of the Chief Judge was at stake. At a time when the City of Zarahemla was recovering from the ravages of war, The Servant of Helaman took it upon himself to investigate a growing conspiracy led by Kishkumen and Gadianton. This conspiracy was already responsible for the murder of a previous Chief Judge, and it was formed with the intent to gain power and control through secret murder and plundering. The Servant of Helaman’s strong sense of duty led him to go above and beyond his daily responsibilities to ensure the safety of the Chief judge. Through disguise, cleverness, and impressive detective skills, the Servant of Helaman managed to learn of this band’s secret signs and code words, infiltrate their secret meetings, and learn of their plans to assassinate the current Chief Judge, Helaman. Ultimately, this servant was able to intercept Kishkumen and thwart his attempted assassination. In my illustration, I depicted this servant vigilantly watching the streets of Zarahemla by night, following suspected conspirators to their meeting place. Though this influential hero of the Book of Mormon is only briefly mentioned, and we don’t even know his name, I admire him for his loyalty to his Master, Helaman, and his willingness to take action. The Spirit definitely led him as he sought to bring these secret combinations to light. Whatever my responsibilities are to my leaders, family, or community, I hope to be able to magnify these as dutifully as the Servant of Helaman did."
