"My ancestor William Stimpson came across the plains with the Martin handcart company. This painting depicts his wife, Rebecca, at the beginning of their journey, full of faith and determination to reach the Salt Lake Valley. But she was not to make it to the valley. She and her newborn child were placed in a single grave near Independence Rock. William and their four-year-old son, Fredrick, were the only two survivors from their family to complete the journey. Fredrick remembers his mother and said that her love and teachings were cherished and were a guide to him all his life. She taught him to sing and to love music."
