"The purpose of this painting is to show the drama, emotion, and great faith of those who left Nauvoo in the dead of winter with very little to sustain life. Thousands of Latter–day Saints were forced to leave in the winter of 1846. Through the hand of Providence, the great Mississippi River froze over. On 25 February 1846, the first Saints began crossing the river on the ice. Hundreds of others waited anxiously under the great tree at the end of Teardrop Lane for their turn to cross."
