Notes

Brigham Young used this trunk during the trek of the first company in 1847. Because of its size, it probably contained smaller personal items, including documents, writing instruments, books, or small clothing items such as socks or handkerchiefs. It is rough but durably made. There are no fancy joints or precious hardwood in the construction. The wood is roughly cut, and the joints are butted together and secured by square nails and metal plates. Pig hide, including the bristles, covers the wood frame. The case has been decorated with brass studs forming Brigham Young’s initials. The iron handles are hand forged.
