Notes

"Brigham Young’s spyglass was made in Liverpool, England. It is made of brass and is covered with leather. In early May, while the company was still on the plains of central Nebraska, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, and Thomas Woolsey gave chase to some cows that had wandered too near a buffalo herd. They were able to turn back the cows before they were swallowed up in the buffalo herd, but Brigham lost his spyglass in the confusion. Although the three men made a careful search, they could not find it. To appease Brigham Young, several men returned to the scene the following day to search for the spyglass, which they found intact despite thousands of buffalo that could have trampled it."
