"Just before leaving Winter Quarters in the spring of 1847, Brigham Young called on William W. Phelps, an experienced printer and newspaper editor, to purchase a press and other printing supplies. Phelps traveled east, visiting Church branches along the way to solicit funds for the purchase. By the time he arrived in Boston, he had gathered enough money to buy a printing press, type, a box of type cases, glue, stationery, printing ink, and 872 bundles of printing paper."
