Notes

"The beautiful rock formation in Wyoming called Devil’s Gate 'is near where the Saints in the Martin handcart company took refuge during the winter of 1856,' explained Howard. 'With decay and death all around them, I think the beauty of God’s nature must have given them hope.' Howard was inspired by the lyrics to the hymn 'Abide with Me' while making the piece. 'It was written during a difficult time in the author’s life as he contemplated his own mortality shortly before his death. Similar thoughts must have been on the forefront of [the Saints’ minds.]' It says, 'Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; / Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; / In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.'"
