Notes

"Elijah is holding a model of the Kirtland Temple, where some of the first ordinances in this dispensation were performed. On the Sabbath, orthodox Jewish people leave an empty chair for Elijah to come. On the scroll is an inscription from scripture: "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse" (Malachi 4:5–6). The bird is resting in an adoring position of courtesy, and the artist knows that birds can do this because she personally experienced it."
