"Now this was a great trial to those that did stand fast in the faith; nevertheless, they were steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God, and they bore with patience the persecution which was heaped upon them. —Alma 1: 25 'The painting depicts Mormon pioneers on their heroic journey to the West as a symbol of strong and powerful faith. Elements of nature around the pioneers have symbolic meaning. The dark part of the sky and clouds suggests trials. The clear part of the sky symbolizes victory and peace. The tree is a symbol of great faith that has been through storms and grown stronger. The sun shining through its leaves sends light to the pioneers, symbolizing the Spirit of the Lord.
