Description from Kenneth R. Mays: "Standing on a granite pedestal with an appropriate inscription, this bronze statue of the Prophet Joseph Smith stands on Temple Square next to a similar statue of his brother, Patriarch Hyrum Smith. The two statues were commissioned and created to declare the vast achievements of these two men to the world. Fashioned by sculptor Mahonri Young (1877-1957), they originally stood in special nooks on the east exterior wall of the Salt Lake Temple."
