Notes

Artist statement: "In creating "Joseph the Seer", I aimed to depict Joseph Smith in a way that transcends the physical, emphasizing his role as a divinely chosen seer. The piece portrays not just the man but the essence of his calling—a figure both incomplete and yet profoundly connected to the divine. The use of his death mask as the foundation for the face serves to highlight Joseph’s mortality, a reminder that despite being a prophet, he was still a man subject to suffering, trial, and ultimately death. Yet, by leaving the face partially incomplete, I suggest that his role extended beyond the limits of his mortal life. The missing pieces symbolize the mystery of divine calling—the idea that a prophet’s work is never entirely understood in his lifetime, but only becomes clearer as time unfolds. The bronze-like material gives the piece a timeless quality, evoking the sense that Joseph’s work and legacy are enduring."
