"The subject in this artwork depicts a group of early western pioneers baptizing an Indian lady who has converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints. Her husband and children watch. They have made a hole in the ice to properly perform the ordinance of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. It is certainly not a convenient time or place, but it is necessary for salvation."
