Notes

“Heber McBride, a member of the Martin Handcart Company, went looking for his father one morning and found him next to a wagon in the snow, dead. As he grabbed his father’s hand, he exclaimed, ‘Oh Father, Father,’ and he felt as if his heart would burst. A young boy views his father with the utmost respect and love, and the loss through death of a father must seem unimaginable to a young child, especially in the severe circumstances experienced by the Martin Handcart Company in Wyoming. Heber’s sacrifice, courage, and faith when he was a young boy are a strength and an inspiration.” —Kelly Pugh
