"In this journal entry, members of the vanguard pioneer company are listed by companies of ten. One hundred forty-four men (many believed this number to be symbolic of 12 men for each of the 12 tribes of Israel), three women, and two children comprised the company of 149 pioneers. After traveling only 11 days, one man, Ellis Eames, became ill near the Elkhorn River and returned to Winter Quarters and is therefore not included on the roster."
