"This artwork portrays the troubles of the Latter-day Saints in Missouri. Tensions between longtime Missouri settlers and the large numbers of Latter-day Saints settling in Jackson County steadily escalated, and mobs became increasingly violent in their persecution of the Saints. In October 1838, the governor of Missouri issued an order declaring that the Mormons must be driven from the state. As the winter of 1838–39 unfolded, thousands of Saints were forced to leave their homes in Missouri and make their way 200 miles eastward to Illinois."
