Notes

"Porter’s model of the Red Brick Store in Nauvoo honors the site of revelations, translations, and divine instruction. Dubbed the 'temple on Water Street,' the store served as the first endowment house, starting in 1842, and was a pivotal center for the Restoration of the gospel. Much more than a frontier store, it was described by Joseph as a 'retirement from the bustle and confusion of the neighborhood and city, and altogether . . . a place the Lord is pleased to bless.'"
