Abstract, Painting
checkerboard, red circle, sun, tree
“This abstract creation with its variety of symbols illustrates one of the most significant events to occur as part of the plan for our eternal progression: the First Vision. The Prophet Joseph Smith, one of the main subjects of the painting, is represented as a red sphere. The elevated checkerboard depicts the spiritual state of mind as he receives sacred revelation. Light and dark squares represent the desire to know more from God and the conflict with the power of Satan. The symbols, however, have more than one meaning. For example, the trees surrounding Joseph not only portray the Sacred Grove, but also the approximate date of the First Vision.” —Valeriano Ugolini
