Notes

"This map details portions of the Rocky Mountains and the northern Great Basin explored by the U.S. Topographical Corps led by Captain John C. Frémont on an expedition in 1843-44. The corps had been commissioned by the War Department to map the area surrounding the Oregon Trail. Accompanied by mountain men guides Kit Carson and Thomas Fitzpatrick, Frémont’s party of 39 men traveled to the Columbia River and back with a brief detour to explore the Great Salt Lake. The resulting map, drawn by company cartographer Charles Preuss was published in 1845. Church leaders carefully considered this edition as they met to plan the journey west and later used it to plot their progress along the trail."
