Notes

"This wagon is typical of those made in Nauvoo in preparation for the journey west. Although no wagons from this early period are known to have survived intact, it is assumed that the most current mechanics of the time were known and used. Thus this wagon has a movable tongue, threaded axle bearings and nuts, and brakes. The undercarriages were generally of the same size so wagons could easily follow in each other’s tracks. Many of the wagons that left Nauvoo were actually farm wagons converted for overland travel. However, the wagons built especially for the journey would have looked much like this, as would the wagons used in the later years of emigration."
